Note: Due to the misconception about what a Blackmouth Cur dog is we have written up an informative article for your enjoyment and education. It is erroneous to believe that the Blackmouth Cur is in the category of the 'term' cur. Cur used to be used somewhat to describe a mongrel dog. That is not the BREED of cur like Blackmouth Cur. You will understand this when you read the article below.
The History of The Blackmouth Cur
Have you read the book or seen the movie ‘Old Yeller’ ? The famous, wonderful dog in that book was none other than your original Cur dog. This is also the dog that Daniel Boone and other pioneers owned during our country’s beginnings. When you read books like “The Big Thicket”, the dogs in those stories are your Curs. The cur was a necessity for the pioneers. The dogs were able to help them herd and protect the cattle and livestock, put food on the table by hunting game, played with the children and were a family companion, and maybe most importantly, protected their family from all kinds of dangers along the trail.
Our Blackmouth Curs still carry these traits today. There are different lines of Curs available today. Some breed for a tree cur, some a hog cur and so on. We are proud of the fact that our Cur lineage has the old original cur dog, not to mention the Ozark Guard. Our dogs have all the original instincts kept in them. They will do what you show them that you want them to do. This is a dying breed as most are breeding for a specific task like treeing only or mixing them with other breeds. This is fine for those wanting tree dogs. But, we prefer to keep the dog with all its natural attributes.
We think our Blackmouth Curs are especially perfect for country and farm life, or for people with yards. If you do not have a yard, you would have to make a daily commitment to exercise your dog by jogging with you, going to a park, etc. They love to be outside and they love exercise and mental activity. They love being with their family. One trait you’ll notice right away in a Blackmouth Cur, is they love to please their master and they crave your praise.
If you own one of our Blackmouth Cur dogs, then you have a living, breathing part of American Heritage.
We would be happy to answer any questions about these wonderful dogs.
